What is BalFolk ?

Balfolk are informal dance and music gatherings that foster a friendly, joyful atmosphere. The dances are simple, designed to be easily learned and enjoyed by everyone.

Balfolk flourish in both urban squares and rural barns alike, requiring little more than shared enthusiasm to bring communities together.

The vibrant Balfolk community consists of local dance groups spread across Europe, growing through events, spontaneous gatherings, live music concerts, and international festivals.

Where are the dances from ?

Traditional dances have been collected in France and other parts of Europe. Balfolk emerged in the 1970s as a movement to rediscover and modernize popular traditions.

  • Group dances (such as An-dro, Gavotte de l’Aven, Ronde du Quercy…)
  • Partner dances (Bourrée, Avant Deux…)
  • Couple dances (Mazurka, Scottish, Polska, Valse…)

These dances and music are still a living tradition, and thus constantly changing.
